Playlist a Book – White Fur by Jardine Libaire
Playlist a Book is a monthly recurring feature where we compile Spotify playlists to accompany our recommended reads. This month, we feature White Fur, a complicated love story set in 1980s NYC between two star-crossed lovers who only seem to bring chaos and upheaval into each other’s lives.
White Fur by Jardine Libaire
Let me set the stage. It’s been weeks, dare I even say a month since I’ve read anything steadily. It’s been even longer—too long—since I’ve read anything quickly. White Fur was one of my extra book selections in my August 2017 Book of the Month Club box. The story seemed right up my alley and was exactly what I’d been searching for to read when I’d grown frustrated at its absence and opted to read nothing at all instead. Jardine Libaire’s second novel came at just the right time.
Split into bite-sized vignettes covering almost two years in the mid-1980’s, Libaire’s electric story is not quite a fairytale, nor a cautionary one. This moody, slow-burner follows Jamey and Elise as they meet in New Haven while Jamey is an undergrad at Yale.
An unexpected and seemingly doomed duo, Jamey is wealthy young man who’s had every advantage life and his family’s good name can toss him. Elise is a foul-mouthed girl from the wrong side of the tracks. On the surface, they have little in common, but they are drawn to each other nonetheless.
When Jamey moves back to NYC for a summer internship, Elise follows. As the summer wans, Jamey grows conflicted of both his feelings for the strange but entrancing Elise and the tight control his family has over his life. At the same time, Elise tries to distance herself from the past. As their relationship ages, things only get more complicated and both are faced with difficult decisions stemming from a clashing of class, money, privilege, circumstance, and love.
I tore through White Fur in just a couple of days. I couldn’t put the book down. I needed to know what happened to these doomed lovers. If you pick up White Fur, then zone out to this book with this playlist, which I think captures the mood and spirit of Jardine Libaire’s beautiful novel.
